Funk originated in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the 1980s. A person who sings funk is a funqueiro or funeira. The songs are characterized by the rhythm “Bum-Cha-Cha-Cha”, and they are mittily recognized. Along with the melodies, rap and beat, it is often the dance, which is similar to twerking in the United States, that is most recognized. Expect wrap around steps and hitting applications.
Funk has several aspects, but funk is always together with many contradictions, it is almost a culture, many people from the favela, the periphery and poorer places identify with this style. But the rich upper class also love to hear funk at their private parties!
Funk gets a lot of criticism, from the lyrics to the dancing to the style of dress. It just goes far beyond a musical style.
Anyway, funk is currently the second most popular music style in Brazil. It’s very hard to throw a party that doesn’t have funky music playing. It is a music style that makes people rock and sway a lot!
Funk is very diverse, but there is more and more of it every time! There is Brazilian funk that once reached over 1 billion views on YouTube.
